With improvements in building energy efficiency and the scaled deployment of clean energy, operational carbon emissions from buildings will decline, while the share of embodied carbon in global building CO₂ emissions is projected to rise from 18% (2019) to 35% (2050). Locked in at project completion, embodied carbon poses a critical challenge to sector decarbonization.

Cement-based materials are a major source of building embodied carbon. Against the global shift toward net-zero emissions, advancing low-carbon innovation in key materials like cement and concrete has become critical to reducing the life-cycle carbon footprint of buildings.

Innovative materials and technologies — such as low-carbon cement, carbon-sequestering concrete, and bio-based concrete — are emerging in cement-based building materials. We aim to leverage Dachan Bay, a real-world environment, to demonstrate their potential and practical value.

Innovative Low-Carbon Building Materials: Categories and Application Areas

Located in Shenzhen, China, Dachan Bay is Tencent’s headquarter, committed to establishing a global sustainable landmark. By using this project as a real-world testbed, we aim to drive the pilot demonstration and scaled implementation of innovative low-carbon building materials, exploring new pathways to decarbonize the building industry.

Selection Criteria

Focusing on next-generation innovation rather than redundant testing of mature technologies, we are seeking proposals from universities, research institutes, and startups with industrialization potential, to support the engineering validation and demonstration of low-carbon building materials and technologies.

The product shall achieve a significant reduction in life-cycle carbon emissions compared with conventional products of equivalent type and specification.

The technology shall demonstrate a significant advancement or breakthrough compared with current conventional technologies.

The product shall possess scalable and stable production capacity to meet the material supply requirements of engineering projects.

The production cost shall not be significantly higher than that of comparable products of the same type and specification, while demonstrating clear potential for further cost reduction.
